Donnie began playing with the Bob-O-Link's Country Hoedown in August of 1984. He was the youngest member of the band during his stay there. His duties included: lead guitar, vocals, banjo and bass. He was often the brunt of Tom Thumbpicket's humor, but he shared in the humor himself, including singing like Donald Duck. During this period in Branson's history, the season was much shorter...beginning at Labor Day and ending at Memorial Day. The Bob-O-Link's traveled all over the country during the "off-season" winter months. "I made a lot of life-time friends during my stay at the Bob-O-Link's", Donnie says, "and you'll never meet a kinder, gentler man than Bob Mabe."
